Angela S. Cooney Colloquium on Law & Humanities

Angela S. Cooney Colloquium on Law & HumanitiesColloqium OrganizationColloqium Events

Colloqium Overview

As Judge Guido Calabresi has argued, "it is impossible fully to understand law without a deep and sympathetic knowledge of the liberal arts". The Cooney Colloquium on Law and Humanities addresses a growing interest in interdisciplinary legal scholarship. By grouping faculty from the College of Law with faculty members from other humanities departments across campus, Cooney Scholars can present work that addresses the intersection of law and humanities in a cooperative forum. The goal of the Colloquium is to offer presentations twice a semester by faculty across campus, which will be followed by commentary by two or three faculty outside the presenter's own department. These meetings will take place at the Goldstein Faculty center on weekday evenings, preceded by a dinner. Because research methodologies differ across disciplines, the presenter will benefit from the fresh perspective.

Colloquium Goals

  • Promote and facilitate interdisciplinary, humanities-oriented legal scholarship.
  • Create bridges between departments and schools through collaborative work and critique.
  • Expand the reach of legal scholarship at SU to encompass the richness of art, literature, anthropology, music, history, and religion, and other humanistic-oriented disciplines.
  • Invite intellectual collaboration between law faculty and scholars from the humanities.
  • Provide an intellectual link that engages law, history, and popular culture.
