Estate Planning Certificate

Estate Planning Certificate
The Estate Planning Certificate is available to all law students who meet the requirements listed below.  The Certificate recognizes students who concentrate a portion of their law school studies in estate planning work and will be awarded to eligible students at Graduation. 
 
Certificate Requirements
To earn the Estate Planning Certificate, students must obtain a minimum of 16 credits in related courses.  Students must complete four core courses and at least one elective in the estate planning curriculum.  Students are strongly encouraged to take all three of the elective courses.  The Certificate does not require students to take additional credits beyond the law school graduation requirement. 

The Estate Planning Curriculum
The Estate Planning curriculum provides students with the skills and education necessary to become effective estate planners for a broad range of clients with diverse planning needs. 
Whether the student is preparing for solo practice or large firm work they will graduate with the legal knowledge required to become successful estate planners for a variety of clients.

Core Required Courses:
Wills and Trusts 
Estate and Gift Taxation
Federal Taxation I
Estate Planning Seminar 
 
At Least One Elective:
Elder Law
Lawyering Skills: Planning for the Non-Traditional Family
Federal Taxation II 

Students are encouraged to meet with the Center Executive Director if they have any questions about course planning to obtain the certificate.

Application
Students must apply to the Center Executive Director during their last semester of law school.

Other Certificates
Students interested in Family Law can earn the Family Law and Social Policy Certificate.
Students interested in Elder Law can also earn a Certificate in Gerontology from the Gerontology Center at Maxwell School.
