Office of Clinical Legal Education

Statement Of The Director, Mary Helen McNeal

The Office of Clinical Legal Education operates two programs:  an on-campus law office representing low income individuals, not-for-profits, and small businesses; and an externship program, which places students in the community to work with government and public interest attorneys and with judges.  Students receive academic credit for both of these programs, with opportunities available for 2nd and 3rd year students.

In academic year 2008-09, clinical opportunities are available in the following areas:  Children's Rights and Family Law, Community Development, Criminal Defense, Disability Rights, Elder Law, Low-Income Taxpayer, and Securities Arbitration and Consumer Law.  Representative externship placements include the United States Attorneys' Office, the City of Syracuse Corporation Counsel's Office, federal and state judges, Hiscock Legal Aid, and Legal Services of Central New York.

                                                         2007- 2008
                                                 Annual Report

The 2007-2008 academic year brought exciting new developments to the Office of Clinical Legal Education, with the addition of the new Elder Law Clinic, expanded opportunities in our Securities Arbitration and Consumer Clinic, and an increasing number of interdisciplinary projects.  Students and faculty collaborated with SUNY Upstate Medical University, SU's Whitman School of Management, and SU's Maxwell School, among others.

I invite you to read the Office of Clinical Legal Education's 2007-2008 Annual Report, which provides more details about the work of specific clinics, profiles of clinic students, and news about faculty activities.  I hope you will share in the excitement of the students' development as lawyers, as professionals and as members of the Syracuse community as they engage in this important work.
