Prior to joining the law faculty, Professor Ryan was a prosecutor with the United States Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California for 11 years, first as a trial attorney in the Criminal Division (Narcotics and Major Frauds Sections) and later as an appellate attorney in the Criminal Appeals Section. Before becoming a federal prosecutor, Professor Ryan was an attorney in private practice with the law firm of Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP, and served as a clerk on the United States District Court for the Central District of California, to the Honorable William J. Rea.
Professor Ryan also currently serves on the Criminal Justice Act panel for the Northern District of New York, in which capacity she represents indigent defendants in federal criminal cases.
