While in law school, Professor French was executive editor of the Northern Kentucky Law Review. He has held positions in either court or academic law libraries in Ohio, Kentucky, Maine and North Carolina. Before assuming his present position at Syracuse, Professor French was the Associate Director of the Law Library at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His special interests include Canadian Law, legal research, library management and Eritrean Legal Bibliography. He has published in the areas of historic preservation, Native American History, legal research using the Internet and Eritrean Legal Bibliography. Professor French has served as a consultant for the United States Information Agency and the U.S. Agency for International Development in Africa.
