Professor Chhablani joined the College of Law after having spent several years representing indigent persons on death row. He began his legal career at a private law firm where, in addition to litigating commercial disputes, he represented, pro bono, persons incarcerated on Illinois' death row. After receiving an ABA Death Penalty Representation Project Fellowship, Professor Chhablani joined the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta and represented clients in Georgia and Alabama on direct appeal and in state and federal post-conviction proceedings. He currently teaches courses in criminal law, criminal procedure, capital punishment and forensic evidence and his scholarship focusses on issues of constitutional criminal procedure and the death penalty.
Professor Chhablani received Syracuse University's Meredith Teaching Recognition Award in 2007 for excellence in teaching. He was selected by the graduating class of 2006 for the Res Ipsa Loquitur award in recognition for his teaching.
Professor Chhablani is a member of the Illinois, Georgia (inactive) and Alabama state bars and has been admitted to practice before several federal and state courts, including the United States Supreme Court.
