Janine Scott L'97

Janine A. Scott received her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1993. After briefly working in corporate America as a financial analyst, Ms. Scott went on to earn her Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1997. While at the College of Law, Ms. Scott served on the Syracuse University Student Judicial Board.

Following law school, Ms. Scott worked as a judicial law clerk to Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge David W. Young on the juvenile criminal docket. She then served as a staff attorney at the Maryland Legal Aid Bureau, Inc., where she is now the supervising attorney in the Domestic Law Unit. Ms. Scott does both trial and appellate work, handling contested divorces, adoptions, custody, child support, and domestic violence cases. She has also provided written and oral testimony on numerous family law issues at legislative hearings in Annapolis, Maryland.

Ms. Scott is active in both the Bar Association of Baltimore City and Maryland State Bar Association. She received a Certificate of Completion and was inducted into the Maryland State Bar Leadership Academy in 2007, where she worked on projects to promote effective leadership within the Maryland Bar. From 2010-2012, Ms. Scott served as Chair of the Government and Public Interest Lawyers Committee for the Bar Association of Baltimore City. In the two terms she served as Committee Chair, Ms. Scott organized and implemented professional, educational, community, and social events. In 2013, Ms. Scott was selected as a Fellow of the Baltimore Bar Foundation.

In addition to her trial work, Ms. Scott is a personal finance author and motivational speaker. Her book, Legal Aid Wealth: Surviving and Thriving on the Salary of a Public Interest Attorney, has garnered national attention and she travels throughout the country, lecturing at schools and conferences on money management.

Ms. Scott is admitted to practice law in Maryland, New York, and Washington, D.C. She resides in Baltimore, Maryland.
