Kate M. Powers

Kate M. Powers graduated summa cum laude from Syracuse University College of Law in 2002, where she was a member of the Order of the Coif, the Justinian Honorary Law Society, and received an award for excellence in the study of Constitutional Law.  Ms. Powers also obtained her Master of Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University.  She earned a Master of Social Work with a Concentration in Health/Mental Health Policy and Practice from the University of Vermont and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Interdisciplinary Leadership Education also from the University of Vermont.  In addition, Ms. Powers is nearing completion of a Certificate in Global Affairs from New York University.

Ms. Powers is currently the Director of Legislative Affairs at the New York State Department of Financial Services. She was previously the Chief Counsel to the New York State Senate Insurance Committee.  In her capacity as Chief Counsel, Governor Paterson appointed her to his Task Force on Group Self Insurance.  Ms. Powers also clerked for the New York State Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Judicial Department, in Albany and worked as an attorney in the Life Bureau of the former New York State Insurance Department and as an associate attorney for the law firm of Thaler & Thaler in Ithaca, New York.  During law school, she interned for the Honorable Kate Rosenthal in Syracuse City Court and in the Civil Division of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York. 

Prior to attending law school, Ms. Powers worked as a legislative aide for U.S. Senator Edward M. Kennedy in Washington, D.C. and as the District Director for a Massachusetts State Representative.  She also interned for U.S. Congressman John Olver.   

Ms. Powers currently serves as a Member of the Town of Bethlehem Planning Board and has volunteered for the International Center of the Capital Region.  In her free time, she likes to travel and has visited over 22 countries to date.
