Virginia Grady L'83

Virginia GradyVIRGINIA GRADY is a native of Roanoke, Virginia. She earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Hollins College (now Hollins University) in Roanoke, where she also worked for a local CBS affiliate station. Ms. Grady graduated from Syracuse University College of Law in 1983. While at the College of Law, she was a member of the National Trial Team, reaching the National Quarterfinals. Ms. Grady was also an intern with the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Northern District of New York, where her passion for federal criminal trial practice was born.

Upon graduation Ms. Grady moved to Colorado, where she began her career as a Deputy in the Denver office of the Colorado State Public Defender. During her seven years with the office, she tried approximately 50 major felony and misdemeanor jury trials, ranging from embezzlement to serial rape and first degree murder. In 1989, the Rocky Mountain News featured her work as a state public defender in a cover story titled, "The Defense Never Rests."

In November of 1990 Ms. Grady joined the office of the Federal Public Defender in Denver as a trial attorney, where she remains to this day. She has defended individuals in every type of complex fraud prosecution, including bank fraud, bank and securities fraud, insider trading and wire/mail fraud. Ms. Grady also defended one of the few criminally charged Clean Water Act cases ever brought in the District of Colorado, U.S. v. Ortiz. She has authored appellate briefs and conducted oral arguments in the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in approximately 10 appeals.

Ms. Grady also runs a training program for the federal criminal defense bar in the Districts of Colorado and Wyoming, and lectures frequently on how to litigate criminal cases in federal court. Ms. Grady is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers, a member of the District of Colorado Committee on Conduct, and is Editor-in-Chief of the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar's quarterly newsletter, The Rap Sheet.

Ms. Grady's husband, Tom Hammond, is also a criminal defense lawyer. They have two children who are currently in college.
