MacKenzie Lewis Appellate Advocacy Competition

MACKENZIE LEWIS APPELLATE ADVOCACY COMPETITION

This competition is named to honor the qualities of distinguished alumnus, Edmund H. Lewis, who epitomized excellence in appellate advocacy.  Ned, as friends and colleagues throughout the state knew him, began his illustrious career in 1909, with his admission to the bar.  In private practice, he was a partner of Mackenzie, Smith, Lewis, Michell & Hughes, now Mackenzie Hughes, LLP.  He served the public as Deputy Attorney General of the State, Syracuse's Corporation Counsel, and as a member of the judiciary.  He served as a Justice of the Appellate Division, Fourth Department, and later as the Chief Judge of the New York State Court of Appeals until his retirement in 1955.

The law firm of Mackenzie Hughes LLP is located in downtown Syracuse and continues to support this annual competition in Judge Lewis's honor.
